This data file is intended for use with the Split-Plot RSM tutorial. The data are from wind tunnel experiment on an aircraft wing - specifically the flap (Kowalski, Parker, and Vining, "Tutorial: Industrial Split-plot Experiments" example from the Quality Engineering, V1, #19, 2007) Two of the parameters, gap and deflection angle, are hard-to-change (HTC) factors. Changing either variable requires opening up the environmentally controlled test chamber. This requires the process to be shut down, which is very costly both in terms of time and expense. A split-plot design minimizes the number of times these HTC factors must be changed, i.e., it restricts their randomization.
